BBC - In the footsteps of Alexander (Persian Gates) 12

Video Description:
In the footsteps of Alexander the Great
In this award winning adventure Micheal Wood embarks on a 2000 mile journey in the foot steps of Alexander's triumphal march from Greece to India. Travelling with Lebanese traders, Iranian pilgrims and Afghan guerillas, by jeep, train, boat, camel and on foot, he interweaves the momentous events of the past with present day reality and brings us new insights into a man whose myth and acheivements still resonate down the centuries
"We saw things I can scarcely believe. We took shelter for the night with an Afghan warlord who had delivered pizzas in the United States, and were hauled off to jail more than once. It was one of the great experiences of my life" - Michael Wood

Partially wrong but ... ( 8 months ago by Siavash777)
Partially wrong but not fully. After Alexander's death, the defeated persian achaemenid empire was divided between Alexander's 3 generals.PtolemyISoter, Seleucus I Nicator and Antigonus I Monophthalmus.Persia proper(Iran) came under the rule of the Seleucids. They ruled Iran for 73 years and as hard as they tried, they could not hellenize Iran. After 73 years, a native Iranian people(the Parthians) gained control of the iranian plateau, defeted the Seleucids and took Iran back.Hellenism failed!
Parthians were a ... ( 8 months ago by Siavash777)
Parthians were a native iranian people from north-east Iran. They overthrew the foreign Seleucids and re-established iranian culture & civilization.Hellenism never gained ground in Iran and was defeated without a trace in Iran.

Your hellenism that you are so bragging about never gained any ground in Iran. The defeated persian achaemenid empire was replaced by an even stronger empire-the Parthian empire-the equals and bitter foes of the roman republic and later roman empire, until the Parthians themselves were defeated by another Iranian dynasty-The Sassanians-the equals and bitter foes of the roman empire and later byzantium empire.

Hellenism didn't disappear all together, but the remnants were largely unimportant, mostly Persianized versions of Greek names and other superficial things like that. But the Hellenistic kings were definately more influenced by Persia than the other way around.

I am interested in the treasures that the Greeks acquired in Persepolis and not in arguments of racialism or who is backwards. When the Romans absorbed Greece, Macedonia in particular, the gold treasures that were brought to Rome literally took a procession over a day to display the gold, etc. Whose was before it was Greek? Part of it had to be Babylonian as well as Persian. And, yes, the argument could go: who had the gold before the Persians? Greeks? Egyptians?

Romans did kick Parthian or Sassanid ass. If anything, they kicked Roman ass.
Well, roman emperor ... ( 1 month ago by sebas71)
Well, roman emperor Traian occupied Parthia capital, Ctesiphon, at the begining of II Century and reached the Persian Gulf. Ctesiphon was occupied later on by Marcus Aurelius, Septimius Severus, Galerius and Heraclius. So the romans kicked persian's ass most often than the other way around.
The Hellenic ... ( 1 month ago by sebas71)
The Hellenic influence persisted a long time, but vanished as the centuries passed. The parthians had a strong greek influence, the sassanid dinasty, not so much. The capital of parthian and sassanid empires was Ctesiphon, in the bank of the Tigris, next to Seleucia. Seleucia was an altogether hellenistic city.
At first, the ... ( 1 month ago by 99999999988888888)
At first, the Parthians were kicking ass. The Battle of Carrhae humiliated the Romans and Parthia raided Syria. The Romans later on did get the upper hand on the Parthians. But the Sassanids brought in a whole new wave of military expantionism. The Sassanids conquered so much Roman land to the point where the Romans were very pessimistic and unwilling to fight. The Romans even copied the Sassanid cataphracts.
Remember, neither the Parthians or Sassanids were Persian.
the parthians may ... ( 1 month ago by sebas71)
the parthians may not have been persians (were closely related culturally an ethnically anyway), but the sassanids were not other thing but persians. Sassanid was the name of a dinasty not a people or race.Besides, the sassanid dinasty originated in Persis the native homeland of persian people.
Last war between the roman empire and persia, between Heraclius and Khosroes, ended with a overwhelming roman victory. The sassanids never recovered and Persia fell to the muslims shortly thereafter.
So did the persians ... ( 3 weeks ago by Thessalonik1)
So did the persians, end of the story has the Greeks winners in the Persian invasion of Greece, and Alexander's Greek conquest sometime later.
Respect though to the Persian stood there !
