BBC reenters the Arabic television market after 12 years with a new free-to-air satellite television service to the Middle East and North Africa. The website at bbcarabic.com is also being relaunched today, March 11th 2008.

The BBC World Service is funded by the British taxpayer via the Foreign Office (originally intended as 'counter propaganda'). The Licence Fee is for British viewers only. Foreign BBC English language TV (BBC World News, BBC America etc..) is funded by advertising.
BBC Arabic is part of the World Service so I assume it's taxpayer funded.
Point being, there are three funding sources for the BBC brand. Judging by lots of online comments I think most UK licence-fee payers don't know that.
